The 2005 Targeting Education Charity Match
 |
The Agnus Dei Charity Match was held on 4-5 June in Brighton, MI and hosted by the Livingston Gun Club. The match director was Jeff La Fave and running the stats was Jake Di Vita. This was the first match of its kind and attendance was rather low with 99 competitors. Oddly enough, L-10 was the biggest division in the match with 25% of the competitors.
This match was a little different for me and Travis. We actually paid for this trip ourselves and did not represent the Army. We also set up a 2-Day Course in conjunction with the match. A good friend of mine, Jake Di Vita, was kind enough to pick us up from the airport and let us stay at his house for a few nights. Jake has an amazing place and his parents made us feel right at home. I think I got the least amount of sleep in those three days then I have in a while but we had a great time. Jake actually helped me set up the course and made sure it would fill. As soon as we got word from Jake, Travis and I booked our flights and we arrived in Detroit on Thursday night. The majority of the course was held on Friday and then we broke down into 2 squads and coached the class through the entire match. We had a great time teaching as always but man were we tired when it was our turn to shoot! After the courses success, with many of our students winning their class, Travis and I geared up for the match.

The match was a lot harder than it looked. With a good bit of experience under my belt, I know what to look out for in competitions and I took notice to quite a bit. It's like I say, sometimes I would rather be clueless and never worry about anything but we all know to win we must be prepared! The match consisted of 8 stages and about 175 rounds. The difficulty level in the match was rather high as I stated above with various 6" plates spread out about 20-25 yards and one stage with all A-zone only targets. It was actually a well balanced match that tested a good bit of your skills. I just couldn't really get in the groove the entire day. I was shooting somewhat aggressive and wasn't seeing the sights like I would have liked. I was putting up some very impressive scores but feel I would have gotten more out of it if I would have backed it off just a bit. It was a fun match for me to kind of go all out on but I am ready to go back to the conservative Max and just knock out the A-zone! I won 5 of the 8 stages and took the overall by 11%! Jake Di Vita, a student from the class, shot an amazing match with only 19 points down on all 8 stages and placed 2nd overall. Great Job Jake! Keep up the good work and you'll be at the top in no time.

Travis Tomasie shot a clean match, which was very hard for Limited. It's kind of boring shooting with him because he always shoots the same, GREAT! He won 7 of the 8 stages in Limited and won his division by 16%! I would like to mention that Travis had some gun problems and almost had to forfeit the match. With some home school gunsmithing he was able to get back in the action and take home the win.

This was a great, challenging match. The atmosphere was very relaxed with the kids from the school helping set up the targets and run the stages. I think everyone truly enjoyed the class as well as the match. I would like to thank Jeff and his staff for doing a great job! Jake didn't just do a great job behind the gun but he did an amazing job on the stats as well. He must have learned from Linda Chico as he had the scores up FAST! Great job guys and congrats to all the winners.
Until next time,
